Behind the scenes: what a Kajabi build actually involves

If you have ever wondered what actually happens when you commission a bespoke Kajabi build, this post pulls back the curtain. Not the polished marketing version, the real one. Here is what the process genuinely looks like, from the first conversation to the moment your site goes live.

It starts with Hatching Ideas

Every build begins with a collaborative brainstorm, not a brief handed over and disappeared with. We sit down together, often over more than one conversation, and get clear on the vision. What are you actually trying to build? Who is it for? What does success look like a year from now, not just on launch day?

This stage matters more than it might seem. A beautifully built website on the wrong foundation is still the wrong website. Getting the vision and goals genuinely clear before any design work begins saves enormous amounts of time and money later, and it means the site that gets built is actually the right one.

Then comes Building the Nest

With the vision clarified, the next stage is strategic planning. This is where the architecture takes shape: how the site is structured, what pages exist and why, how a visitor moves through it, how your offers fit together, and how your branding should feel.

This stage is deliberately unglamorous. There is no visible design yet. It is the equivalent of an architect's plans before a single brick is laid. But it is the stage that determines whether everything that follows goes smoothly or whether you end up rebuilding something halfway through because the foundation was not right.

Stretching Your Wings - the actual build

This is the stage most people picture when they think about a website build: the custom design, the branding coming to life, the courses or memberships being structured and populated, the sales pages being written and built, the email sequences and automations being set up.

It is also, in my experience, the stage where the value of bespoke work becomes most visible. Every build I do is genuinely bespoke, not a template with a new logo dropped on top. That means your site reflects your actual brand, your actual voice, your actual offers, rather than fitting your business into someone else's predetermined structure.

  • Custom branding, layout, and user experience built specifically around your business
  • Sales and offer pages designed to convert, not just to look attractive
  • Course, membership, or coaching programme setup, fully structured and populated
  • Email and automation setup so the system works for you from day one

Taking Flight - launch and beyond

The final stage is launch, but it does not end the moment the site goes live. A proper handover includes training, so you genuinely understand how to use and maintain what has been built, not just admire it from the outside. It includes launch support, because the first few weeks of a new site or a new offer often surface small things that need adjusting. And it includes post-launch tweaks, because no build is ever truly finished the moment it goes live. It evolves as you do.

This is also where the scope of the original agreement matters. A clear scope document, set out before work begins, protects both of us. The investment quoted covers what was agreed at the outset. Anything additional that emerges along the way is quoted separately and transparently, rather than becoming a source of confusion or resentment later.

How long does it actually take?

A full bespoke Kajabi build is typically delivered within a twelve-week timeframe. That includes all four stages of the journey, from the first brainstorming conversation through to a fully trained, fully launched site. Some builds move faster depending on complexity and how quickly content and decisions come together on your side. Twelve weeks is the realistic expectation to plan around.

Why the process matters as much as the outcome

A website is not just a finished product. It is the result of a hundred small decisions made along the way, and the quality of those decisions depends heavily on whether the person making them actually understands your business.

This is where the therapeutic background genuinely changes how a build feels, not just how it looks. Understanding the emotional weight practitioners carry into their work, the particular sensitivity required in how a client journey feels, and the ethics of how a practitioner business presents itself online, all shape decisions throughout the build that a purely technical developer might never think to consider.

If you are considering a build

If this gives you a clearer sense of what working together would actually look like, the next step is usually a conversation. You can find out more about Kajabi builds and combined mentoring packages here, or book a Connection Call to talk through your specific situation and whether a full build, or perhaps a focused session first, is the right starting point for you.
